If you recently upgraded your iphone or ipod to the new iOS 4.2, then you might be shocked to find all your media is missing. If your videos appear non existent or your music and photos have vanished after running the update there is no need to fear! You are likely suffering from the iOS 4 No Content you can download music from iTunes bug.
A simple fix for this problem is to connect your idevice to your computer and allow iTunes to open.
Next, select the the phone or ipod touch from the list of devices and click “Music”.
Play a song from the library and then re-sync.
Finally, click eject and disconnect your apple touch device from the computer.
Everything should now be back to normal!

Hi I tried this but it didn’t work, do you have any other suggestions? thanks Sue
iTunes may be able to restore your apps and other lost data. According to PC World, you can complete the following steps to resync after an update to iOS 5:
1. Plug your device back into your PC and open up iTunes.
2. Click on the device name (iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch) in the left-hand column.
3. Click on “Sync” or “Apply” in the bottom-right corner of the screen (see screenshot below). iTunes should begin restoring any data you had on the device.
4. Be patient. Syncing can take a very, very long time.
5. After restoring, iTunes may ask if you want to transfer purchased items back to iTunes. You must click “Transfer,” or else those items will be deleted from your device.
I tried the above but they did not work. I had recently installed iTunes on a new machine as other machines that had itunes crashed. I had avoided updating the software for a few YEARS but it’s getting hard to do anything on my iPod touch. Today i chose the backup option before updating the software & it still had everything but at some point during the restore, i lost everything so all i have now is a clean n empty iPod touch & a very frustrated me. I don’t have anything in the current iTunes library as this is a new machine…HELP!!!!
I did an update for an Iphone 4 and when it was done, I had no apps or music on my phone. I called Apple and they wanted $29.99 to “try” to help me fix it! These steps worked perfect! I’m now back up and running. Thank you so much for posting these trouble shooting steps. Really helps out people like me that aren’t to computer savy!
